Todd Hoffman

Abstract: There are trillions of barrels of oil in Unconventional Reservoirs, and while well rates start out high, they decline quickly and primary recovery factors are very low, often in the single digits. This indicates a need for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The efforts to implement EOR in unconventional reservoirs are examined in full detail including field trials/pilots for gas injection, waterflooding, and surfactants. The location of the residual oil and the physical mechanisms that cause additional oil production are also discussed.

Speaker Bio: Todd Hoffman is a Professor and Department Head for the Petroleum Engineering Department at Montana Tech. He teaches classes on Reservoir Simulation, EOR and Unconventional Reservoirs. Prior to that, he was a reservoir engineering consultant to the oil and gas industry specializing in flow modeling and fractured reservoirs. He has over 25 years of combined experience in academia and industry. His research involves improved recovery for conventional and unconventional oil reservoirs, fracture reservoir modeling and history matching. Todd received his B.S. in petroleum engineering from Montana Tech and his M.S. and his Ph.D. in petroleum engineering from Stanford University.
